SHARING & CARING

Messages of hope and support for those concerned that dementia may be affecting their own lives or that of someone close by JUNE & BRIAN HENNELL 01453 827565

EARLY DAYS

1. CONCERNS…. keep brief & detailed notes of what happens when, to/with whom & the outcomes (eg. aggression, remorse, anxiety, withdrawal, joy )

2. TRY NOT TO ARGUE with each other about the problems/difficulties

3. PREPARE, with others if necessary, written questions to which you need answers. Add to them as issues arise.

TIPS FOR CARERS

excerpted from Living Well Handbook of NHS Gloucestershire, Unit 5220 Valiant Court

Early days

After the diagnosis of dementia for someone you love:

Try not to worry. You are now a carer and didn’t ask to be one. Take a deep breath. As often as you need, when things feel over-whelming; retreat to the garden or just anywhere to give yourself a few moments of peace. Most importantly keep things in perspective and don’t apportion blame to yourself or anyone else.

Practical help. Write a list of the skills you don’t have but now wish you did. Be realistic. For example, learn how to read a meter, adjust timers or check fuses but engage an electrician for other jobs. Make a list of handy numbers to call.

TIPS FOR MAKING A DEMENTIA JOURNEY

For Brian was diagnosed with Frontal Temporal Dementia in February 2009 when he joined the many thousands of people who needed to learn to adjust his life and start his own dementia journey.

For most of us life is often a compromise but when the impact of short-term memory loss is felt, this compromise seems massive. Both before and after diagnosis, reactions may be :- feeling vulnerable, alone, scared, tired, challenged, wanting to fit in but rarely so doing, confused & unable to clear the mist, singled out for punishment and grief as in a bereavement….. in a funny way it is possible to grieve for the happy, carefree life one has lost.
